I Came Around in Circles
Art Book for Wendy Hubert and Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation
\ CHALLENGE
Juluwarlu Aboriginal Corporation commissioned a publication to accompany the first major exhibition of senior Yindjibarndi Elder, linguist and painter Wendy Hubert.
Despite a lifetime of cultural leadership, no single work had brought together her voice, art and legacy. The challenge was to create a book that would honour Wendy’s authority and vision, preserve Yindjibarndi knowledge for future generations, and carry her stories beyond the Pilbara — all while keeping her at the centre of the design process.
\ OUTCOME
This was not a book about Wendy — it was Wendy’s book. Developed through deep collaboration with Wendy, Juluwarlu and Walk Through Walls, the publication was treated as an act of cultural transmission, not interpretation. The title, I Came Around in Circles, reflects both Wendy’s personal journey and the cyclical nature of Yindjibarndi law.
The design approach was grounded, spacious and intentional. White space echoed the vastness of the tablelands. Earth tones referenced place. A restrained typographic system let Wendy’s words and paintings speak clearly. Editorial contributions from Lorraine Coppin, Michael Woodley and Nici Cumpston offered broader cultural and curatorial framing, while every design decision centred Wendy’s voice.
Launched at the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, I Came Around in Circles has become more than a companion to an exhibition — it’s a permanent record of Wendy Hubert’s cultural authority. It has strengthened intergenerational connection within the Yindjibarndi community and introduced new audiences to her work across Australia. A book created by listening — not leading. A life, a law, a legacy — in print.
